Schauspiel Frankfurt has a rich tradition and a long history. It is the largest spoken theatre in the Rhine Main region with a nationwide reputation. Artistic Director Anselm Weber and his Head Dramaturg Marion Tiedtke, took over the management of the house at the beginning of the 2017/18 season.

Based on »WE«, which in a word describes the motto of the first season, the 2018/19 season focuses on what has shaped us during the past 70 years. What upheavals have occurred since the adoption of Basic Law (German Grundgesetz) in 1949? What impact do these have on our present? How did we become who we are? 24 new performances, including 14 premiers, 2 German language premiers, 1 German premier and 9 world premiers, as well as 20 titles in the repertoire, characterize the varied schedule of the 2018/19 season.

Spread over our four venues, the Schauspielhaus, Kammerspiele, Box and Bockenheimer Depot, renowned directors such as Ulrich Rasche, Luk Perceval, Andreas Kriegenburg, Roger Vontobel, Jan-Christoph Gockel, Robert Borgmann and David Bösch stage both, classic and contemporary pieces by Lutz Hübner and Sarah Nemitz, Ewald Palmetshofer, Jan Neumann and Konstantin Küspert. With the 2017/18 season, Schauspiel Frankfurt launched its largest cultural education project so far. »All Our Futures« is giving 180 young people from three different areas of the city the opportunity to question the current way in which we coexist and to develop ideas and models for how we should live together. In addition to this three year large scale project, performances, workshops and discussions provide the opportunity for young people to interact through the Junges Schauspiel Frankfurt.

Also conceived as a three year project, the series »Stimmen einer Stadt« (Voices of a City) provides a dramatic insight into the city of Frankfurt, 3 x 3 premiers, each premier featuring three authors, who poetically narrate the lives of real people in this city. During the 2018/19 season Martin Mosebach, Thomas Pletzinger and Antje Ravik Strubel will produce their first mono-dramas for theatre and for Schauspiel Frankfurt. In addition to the other productions, the BOX and the Chagallsaal will play host to the »X-Räume« (X-rooms), creating locations for encounters, discussions and shows, in which artists present themselves, allowing the audience and citizens of Frankfurt to converse with one another. These rooms will serve as a platform for finding the answer to »How did we become who we are?« Are there values that survive upheaval? Is there a traditional law that, despite massive social cuts, still applies to the here and now? These questions will be discussed by philosophers, lawyers, sociologists and authors in our series of speeches »Denkraum: Constitution, but how?« We ask our actors how change has affected their roles and about their passions in »Freiraum«. What upheavals have occurred in a city like Frankfurt during the past 70 years? Our assistant directors explore this as future playwrights in »Spielraum«.

As part of the »Studiojahr Schauspiel« introduced in 2017, eight students from the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts will complete their third year of training at the Schauspiel Frankfurt.
