In 1890, Engelbert Humperdinck came to Frankfurt on the invitation of Cosima Wagner as music tutor to her son Siegfried. A few months later, he was appointed professor at the Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory. In addition to his teaching duties at the academy, he was made the opera editor of the Frankfurter Zeitung by Leopold Sonnemann. Humperdinck stayed in Frankfurt until 1897, during which time he composed his fairy-tale opera Hänsel und Gretel, which won him international acclaim. The singspiel version was completed in 1890, the opera version in 1893. During his Frankfurt time, he also produced the melodrama Königskinder (world premiere in 1898), the “Kindermärchenspiel” (fairy-tale opera/play for children) Die sieben Geislein (world premiere in 1895), as well as a number of choral pieces and songs. In 1897, Humperdinck moved to Boppard where he worked as a composer.
