Patron:
Federal Ministry for Economy and Technology
Year of Foundation: 1991
Branches:
The Competition is open to all manufacturers of musical instruments in Germany whose products are retailed or marketed directly (no unique items). The Musical Instrument Award is intended to draw attention to instruments that are shown to be of particularly high quality in a three-stage test and offer a favourable price-performance ratio. Goal thereby is to strengthen the international market opportunities of German manufacturers.
Award Cycle:
The Musical Instrument Award is presented annually in two product groups on the occasion of the opening of the Music Fair in Frankfurt am Main.
Award Committee:
Since 1999, the Federal Ministry has commissioned the Zwotauer Institute for Instrument Construction IfM with the handling of the German Musical Instrument Award. The IfM acts as assessment and business centre. The three test stages of the IfM consist of a subjective practical test by professional musicians, an expert assessment of the craftsmanship and a purely objective acoustic measurement process.
Form of Award:
Competition winners are publicly announced. They receive a medal and a certificate. The winning instruments are presented at the Music Fair and exhibited for its duration.
