Die Komödie

Escaping the everyday with familiar comedies and humorous plays by contemporary authors.

“Die Komödie” invites to escape the everyday on seven days a week, with familiar comedies and humorous plays by contemporary authors. The term light theatre plays a key role with “Die Komödie”: all should come, all are cordially invited.

On 26. 9. 1950 Helmut Kollek opened the “Theater am Rossmarkt”, a small playhouse in a partly bombed out building. Even in those early days the programme included literary productions and comedies by Curt Götz, Theo Lingen and Benedetti. After several moves Kollek finally took up domicile at Neue Mainzer Strasse 18. He called his theatre “Die Komödie” and the name has remained ever since.

In 1972 Claus Helmer started work, first with co-responsibility and from 1975 as solely responsible Director of “Komödie”. As producer he also develops many plays and as actor arranges the programme. The building at Neue Mainzer Strasse was demolished in 1998 and just one year later the curtain again rose in “Komödie” in the larger and modern building at the same address.
