The nationwide competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students of the bowed string instruments violin, viola, cello, and double bass who are enrolled for the German Konzertexamen proficiency exam to prepare for a career as a soloist or lead in a distinguished orchestra. Technique and mastery of the instrument are as much a criterion as music interpretation and style of performance.

A new jury is nominated every year to judge the presentations of the competitors.

Additionally, the jury can decide on a special prize that takes the form of a place in the final round of the competition for a stipend and internship in the Orchesterakademie programme of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester).

All participants received a set of strings for their instruments from Pirastro GmbH, Offenbach am Main. In addition, several participants received an invitation to join the final round of the competition for a stipend and internship in the Orchesterakademie programme of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester).

As the 3rd and 4th prizes were awarded twice in each case, the total prize money this year amounted to € 20,000
