The Italian Film Festival traditionally shows current productions in the original and with subtitles. The films take a critical look at contemporary Italy, at crises of identity and hopes and longings of the individual, which are dealt with in genres such as thriller, road movie or romantic comedy. On the bill are films by newcomers alongside works by doyens who frequently travel to Frankfurt to present their films in person.

The 15th edition of the festival organised by the Deutsches Filminstitut took place for the first time at the CineStar Metropolis – an alternative venue to the festival cinema at the Deutsches Filmmuseum, which is currently closed for renovation. The events at the CineStar Metropolis are realised with the kind support of the Saalbau GmbH.
The festival is realised in cooperation with Made in Italy, Rome, and sponsored by the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali as well as the Direzione per il Cinema, Rome. The event is supported by the Consolato Generale d’Italia in Frankfurt am Main, and also the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Frankfurt am Main and the Casa di Cultura e.V.
