Artist in Residence Program

AIR_Frankfurt aims to support and encourage contemporary visual art and promote an international exchange between Frankfurt am Main and emerging art centres. AIR_Frankfurt offers young artists the opportunity to gain experience relevant to their own artistic practice and build an international network.

The Artist-in-Residence programme initiated by Frankfurt's Department for Culture (Kulturamt) has been building and strengthening its international network for over 25 years. More than 100 artists from Frankfurt and as many from other countries have been able to take advantage of this cultural exchange programme so far. AIR_Frankfurt is unique in Germany as a model for supporting young artists.

Visual artists who live and work in Frankfurt can apply for the scholarships by submitting a cover letter and a project proposal. There is an open call for applications. The beneficiaries are selected by the juries of the host countries participating in the programme. The period of residence in a host country is three months. Visual artists from Frankfurt will receive a grant of 1,000 euros per month. The participating cities provide live-in studios.

Guest artists in residence in Frankfurt
Since 2016, the Artist-in-Residence programme in Frankfurt has been run by basis e.V., with the aim of ensuring the kind of curatorial support that is so essential for such a programme. Guest artists are looked after individually during their stay in Frankfurt. The three-month period of residence is accompanied by exhibitions, lectures, and workshops.

Partner organisations abroad
In selecting international cooperations, AIR_Frankfurt places great value on diversity in its partner organisations, as well as the artistic climate of the prospective city of residence. In addition to AIR Antwerpen, HIAP in Helsinki, CEAAC in Strasbourg, and the Goyang National Art Studio in Seoul, with whom AIR_Frankfurt has been cooperating for many years now, basis e.V. was able to gain the Lostgens' Contemporary Art Space in Kuala Lumpur as a new partner in 2016, with the support of the Goethe-Institut Malaysia. A new partner since 2019 is Artport Tel Aviv in Israel, since 2020 Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore.

Jury
AIR_Frankfurt places great emphasis on a professional and fair selection process when choosing candidates for the scholarships. The jury of independent experts will select up to 5 candidates for the consideration of our partner organization in each case, who will then make the final decision based on how much the candidate's artistic development can be expected to benefit from the residency as well as the candidate's ability to fit in with the exchange programme run by the institution to which they are applying.
