The biennial Frankfurter Lyriktage (Frankfurt Poetry Days) offer an overview of current tendencies in contemporary poetry. In 2009 the focus was on advanced nature poetry. Landscape and nature have always been among the great subjects of poetry. They provide space for longing and escape from everyday life. The poets of Classicism and Romanticism celebrated unfettered nature as a counter model to the urbanised world. However, in the wake of literary modernism Gottfried Benn mocked the “whisperers of grasses and nuts and flies”. Despite the burden of a long tradition, 50 years on he would have had reason to be amazed at the reinvention of the nature poem.
